Module summary
If you have seen the film 'My Big Fat Greek Wedding' you will know what fun it can be to trace the Greek origins of many English words. In this course you will learn to read, write and speak the original language of the New Testament. It is run on heuristic lines so you may be pleasantly surprised to find out how many Greek words you already know. (heuriskein is Greek for to find/to discover.) So take the plunge. Play 'Hangman' with the Greek alphabet and find out what Archimedes really said when he jumped out of his bath! Along the way (that's hodos in Greek) your command of English will definitely improve and you may find that your essay marks in other subjects will start to soar.Objectives
To introduce the elements of Greek grammar; for students to acquire skills in reading elementary New Testament Greek.Learning outcomes
Knowledge of the basic elements of New Testament Greek grammar, the ability to read and write Greek text and to translate simple sentences.
Syllabus
Using a combination of formal teaching, informal word games and class exercises from a variety of text books, students will reaach a level comparable with the material in the first 25 chapters of J W Wenham. 'The Elements of New Testament Greek'.
