Module summary

This module introduces students to the 'Quest for the Historical Jesus', which began in the late 19th century, and to the problems of detecting from the scriptures information about his life and teachings. Topics covered include the biblical account of Jesus' background and environment, the place of John the Baptist, the basic elements in Jesus' teaching in the Synoptic Gospels and in the Fourth Gospel and the Passion and Easter accounts in all four Gospels.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to understand the problems involved in abstracting from the New Testament records information about the historical Jesus; they should be able to evaluate the theological motives behind the New Testament's accounts of Jesus's life and teaching.

Syllabus

An introduction to the biblical account of Jesus's background and environment and to the place of John the Baptist. An analysis of the basic elements in Jesus's teaching as these are found in the Synoptic Gospels and in the Fourth Gospel. A study of the Passion and Easter accounts as these appear in all four Gospels. An introduction to Paul's interpretation of Jesus's teachings.
