Module summary

What are the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament)? How were they formed? How are they scheduled by modern scholars? What are some of the leading ideas within them? These and other questions will be explored in the context of the Ancient World.

Objectives

To increase students' awareness of the methodologies of critical and historical enquiry into the Hebrew Scriptures.

Syllabus

Fiction and history and the role of literary and archaeological enquiry; the Davidic kingdom as depicted in Chronicles and Samuel; the Patriarchal period and the problems of history; exile and return and the writing of history; wisdom traditions; the development of the law in Israel; the social setting of Israelite prophecy; intertestamental period. Those students who have passed THEO1020 or who can demonstrate similar competence in Biblical Hebrew may opt to take seminars based on the Hebrew text instead of those based on the English text, provided that, in the judgement of the Module Leader in consultation with the Head of School, the numbers so opting constitute a viable seminar group. The final examination paper will contain a question on the seminar texts which will be phrased so as to invite appropriate alternative responses on the basis of either the Hebrew or the English text seminars.
