Module summary

Who wrote the Fourth Gospel? Where did he/they get their information? How does this Gospel relate to the others? These questions and others will be explored in this module together with some theological themes and some important passages of text.

Objectives

To enable students to develop the skills of
(1) exegetical, historical and theological analysis of a biblical text in translation;
(2) elucidating and interpreting key themes within a text and
(3) evaluating the literary and socio-historical problems associated with the origins of the text.

Exegetical skills; skills of literacy; socio-historical and theological analysis of a text.


Syllabus

After examining the problems of the genre and the sources and composition of the Fourth Gospel, the issues of authorship, date, recipients and socio-historical context attention will focus on the exegesis of selected passages of text in English translation and on the interpretation of key theological themes found within the document. In addition, major scholarly work on the Fourth Gospel will be evaluated.
