Module summary

An exploration of the life and writings of some of the leading fathers of the Church from the 2nd-5th centuries in their socio-political context. The individuals selected for study are a diverse, lively and sometimes distinctly odd group of people.

Objectives

Building on work in Level 2 theological modules, students will further develop their knowledge and understanding of selected aspects of patristic thought and of critical assessment of the texts. They will learn how to reconstruct theological themes using the extant primary source materials that relate to the individual theologians being studied. They will further develop and adapt to patristic texts, the skills in exegesis to which they were introduced in biblical modules.

Syllabus

A critical assessment of the lives and selected aspects of the teaching of some of the major Greek and Latin fathers of the Church from the late second century to the fifth century CE.

Attention will be paid to the Jewish roots of this teaching and to influences upon its development from Graeco-Roman philosophy.

At the appropriate points in the module, there will be detailed exegesis of selected passages from substantial texts and of smaller complete texts related to the themes indicated above.

This thematic and exegetical study will be set in the socio-political context of the Roman Empire and that of the emerging institutions of the Early Church.
