Syllabus

This module is divided into 4 parts. Part 1 is the introduction to a key element in the study of the visual arts - the ordering of knowledge and observations. This develops into a consideration of the taxonomic principles behind systems of clarifying objects which underpin the museum system. Parts 1 and 2 focus on the display of the decorative arts at Fairfax House and Harewood House. The range of their decorative arts holdings and the nature of their displays and interpretations are examined in depth. Part 3 brings together all the proceeding elements of the module as students are required to put together a paper exhibition using objects from the Harewood collection taking into account the curatorial conservation and interpretation questions that may arise. This exercise includes the writing of a catalogue raisonne and introductory essay.
