Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have built on the range of historiographical materials introduced in level 1 and developed specific themes to a more advanced theoretical level.

They should also understand the History of Art as constituted through different narrative conventions, conceptual structures and social formations and be able to translate this understanding into alternative and critical narrative structures.

Skills outcomes
- Verbal and written fluency in constructing a logical and coherent argument;
- Use of audio visual aids;
- Participation in group discussions;
- Co-ordination and dissemination of a range of historical, contextual visual information;
- Using bibliographies and databases.


Syllabus

Conventions of social explanation, values and access to art as value; art as meaning; art as 'truth'. What does it mean? Recommended reading; Plato, Aristotle, Kant, Hegel, Schiller, Marx, Nietzsche, Heidegger.
