Module summary

PRE-REQUISITES: Students wishing to take this module as an elective must have completed at least 20 credits from the following modules: ARTF1045, ARTF1046, ARTF1041, ARTF1042 or ARTF2000- This module aims to introduce students to the central questions of curatorship, museology and museum management. - Contemporary theory, through the writings of Foucault, Barthes, Bourdieu, Baudrillard, Belk, Derrida amongst others will form a foundation for our consideration of museum practice. - The module aims also to introduce students to museological thought through a close reading of texts such as Hooper-Greenhill, Pierce, Elsner and Cardinal, and Maleuvre. - We will examine the methods and ideas behind the collection, interpretation and display of objects. - The representation of cultural diversity within the museum will be a key consideration. - Museum architecture and the theories of museum space will also be explored.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have a critical understanding of the issues surrounding curatorship, museology and museum management, including cultural diversity within the museum.

- Co-ordination and dissemination of a range of historical, contextual visual information
- Using bibliographies and databases.

Syllabus
