Module summary

Most UK organisations produce financial statements that are publicly available. This module will enable students to understand how published information is used to assess company performance using CORE analysis, based on a UK quoted company. It will consider the principles underlying the compilation of financial statements and some of the related problems such as valuation of assets and liabilities.Further information about the Business School is available on the website: Business School

Objectives

On completion of this module, students will: be familiar with the meaning of (most) accounting terminology; be aware of the types of financial statements that are included in a published set of accounts, and have developed an understanding of how these statements are produced; be able to interpret financial information arising from virtually any organisation; and be able to understand the distinctions between accounting information produced by an organisation for external publication in the form of financial statements and accounting information produced for the internal purposes of planning, decision making and control.

Syllabus

Essential accounting terminology and concepts, and an introduction to basic financial statements; The preparation of accounts; problems associated with valuing assets and liabilities; including consideration of depreciation methods and the valuation of inventories and work in progress; and The interpretation of accounts, including company profiling, an introduction to the calculation and interpretation of financial ratios as a means of assessing company performance, and CORE Analysis as a means of strategic performance appraisal using financial statements.

Private study

For each 10 credits of study taken the expectation is that the normal study time (including attendance at lectures and classes, self-study and revision) is 100 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will be given solutions to questions considered in classes. In addition on-line MCQ tests will provide further additional feedback.
