Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of the main developments in Human Resource Management and Industrial Relations in East Asia.
- Develop an understanding of the traditional systems of employee relations in the major economies of the region including Japan, China, India and Singapore.
- Display an awareness of contemporary developments in HRM and Industrial Relations and how these have impacted on and been influenced by national systems.

Syllabus

This module will consider the systems of employee relations in eastern Asia and will particularly focus on industrial relations and Human Resource Management in the key economies including Japan, India, China, Singapore and Taiwan. It will explore the ways in which contemporary economic developments, including the growth of transnational corporations and 'Globalization', have impacted on traditional systems of industrial relations and employment regulation. The module will adopt a comparative approach to a number of issues in HRM and industrial relations in these countries, including pay and reward systems, training and development, employee communications, gender and trade unions. The influence of national and global economic forces in the development of these issues will be explored.

5 hours reading and 2 hours preparation per seminar: 63 hours;
20 hours further reading and 189 hours preparation for assessment: 209 hours.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Formative feedback will be given on group and individual contributions during class, on an essay plan before each assessed essay and detailed formative feedback will be given on the first assessed essay in time to give students a good measure of their progress.
