Module summary

Probability theory forms the basis of the statistical methodology which is now widely applied in the modern scientific and technological world. This module introduces simple computer simulation techniques to explain and illustrate some of the most basic concepts of probability and statistics, and to apply them in areas such as sampling, time series, quality control and reliability.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to: (a) undertake simple data manipulation using re-expression; (b) carry out Monte Carlo simulation on a variety of topics; (c) apply statistical methods in time series, quality control and reliability; (d) use a statistical computing package and write a report.

Syllabus

1. Random numbers, checks on randomness and independence.
2. Monte Carlo simulation, models of chance, applications and examples including genetics, reliability, limit theorems.
3. Random sampling with and without replacement, binomial approximation to hypergeometric distribution.
4. Poisson process, Poisson approximation to binomial distribution, exponential model of inter-arrival times.
5. Quality control, attribute sampling, OC curve, sampling plans, control charts.
