Objectives
On completion of the module, students should be able to:- demonstrate a basic understanding of the physical principles of sound
- understand the role of the ear and brain in the reception of sound
- understand some of the perceptual consequences of acoustic and psychoacoustic phenomena
Syllabus
a) An introduction to the fundamental concepts associated with acoustics including: wave propagation; frequency and amplitude; harmonic series; resonance; format frequencies; the basic acoustic properties of musical instruments.
b) An examination of the role of the ear: the functions of the pinnae, the middle ear and the cochlea; transduction of air pressure changes to electrical signals; the sensitivity and frequency response of the ear;
c) An introduction to psychoacoustics: including pitch perception; loudness; timbre; masking etc;
