Objectives
On completion of his module, students should be able to demonstrate:- a knowledge of contemporary music, or music of a specified genre and type, gained through practical application of compositional technique;
- clear and carefully organised notation of musical ideas, or an effective means of documenting non-notated compositional material;
- technical ability with identified forms, compositional models or musical practices;
- some ability to assimilate given compositional styles; developing fluency in free composition.
Syllabus
Students are expected to choose from a seminar topic from relevant repertoire, to form the basis of a lass discussion. In addition to discussing new music, they are presented with individual topics (e.g. an examination of form, process and time) which form the basis of weekly exercises in compositional techniques. Students will have the chance to pursue their own original work in free composition, whether using traditionally notated, computer/electronically generated media or appropriate other notation/documentation for their compositions.
