Objectives
On successful completion of this module students should be able to appreciate the significance of pensions policies, the political and social issues that arise in relation to these and to apply a number of perspectives to the pensions policies. They should be able to appreciate the different types of pensions, the implications of demographic change and the importance of pensioners as a social group.Syllabus
This module will outline the historical development of pensions policies, provide an account of the different types of pension provision and introduce a number of theoretical approaches to both pensioners. The module considers the respective merits of the market and the state as providers, outlines the social implications of demographic change, actuarial principles and issues of social inequality. The political and social implications of regulation and control, the possibilities of reform and the political context along with comparisons with other EU countries and Australia are all addressed.

Lectures and seminars.
Methods of assessment
Either two essays of 3000 words, or a 3 hour examination.
