Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:1. Critically understand theories of literature and give clear and accurate exposition of leading philosophical treatments of such;
2. Demonstrate the capacity to analyse arguments critically and develop their own position in relation to these issues.
Syllabus
This module examines some of the central concerns which motivate philosophical analysis of and reaction to literary texts. This will involve covering issues such as what literature is, what it is to respond to a text as literature and what the values of literature are. Assembling the elements of philosophical criticism from these studies, the module will bring them to bear on a variety of literary texts chosen for their relation to and capacity for provoking philosophical reflection. The module presumes no formal expertise in literature or literary studies but does assume an interest in literature.
