Module summary
This module will give you skills and knowledge to enable you to understand theoretical and conceptual debates within the sociology of racism and ethnicity, and their implications for understanding and challenging problems of racism, inequality and diversity acros the globe. This will involve the acquisition of knowledge relative to patterns of continuity and change in racism and ethnicity, and an awareness of the relationship between ethnic and cultural diversity and social inequality.Topics covered include: the historical origins of race and racism, scientific racism, foundational figures, understanding ethnicity, regional racialisation, racist violence, racism reduction, media representation, and the post-racial, post-ethic world.Objectives
On successful completion of this module students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of theoretical and conceptual debates within the sociology of racism and ethnicity and their implications for understanding and challenging problems of across the globe, but with particular reference to Britain and Europe.This will involve the acquisition of knowledge relative to patterns of continuity and change in racism and ethnicity, and an awareness of the relationship between ethnic and cultural diversity and social inequality. Students will develop transferable skills (particularly written and oral communication), cognitive skills (particularly synthetic and evaluative) and specific skills in the ability to show racial and cultural awareness.
