Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- show competence in the critical reading of philosophical texts;
- be able to discuss texts and the ideas they contain with others of opposing views;
- show a basic knowledge and understanding of some central ideas in the History of Philosophy;
- begin to be familiar with and integrated into both the discipline and the School.

Skills outcomes
- the ability to critically interpret familiar and unfamiliar texts from the history of philosophy;
- the ability to pay attention to detail;
- the ability to articulate one's understanding of a philosophical text both orally and in writing.


Syllabus

Students will study a number of passages from classic texts in the History of Philosophy chosen for their approachability, fruitfulness for discussion and relevance to other modules.
