MSc Medical Statistics

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have shown evidence of being able to:
- demonstrate understanding of a range of statistical methods for the analysis of medical data;
- embark on a programme of research as a research student;
- undertake data analysis for a wide variety of medical data;
- exercise key programming skills with a focus on data analysis using a range of software;
- undertake career as a medical statistician;
- explain statistical methods and results of statistical analysis in both written and verbal form, to both technical and non-technical audiences;
- undertake a substantial statistical project under supervision.

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree in statistics;
- evaluating the quality of research data and selecting suitable methods of analysis;
- setting targets for project work under supervision;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development.

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will involve the achievement of the students in:
- evidencing an ability to select and conduct appropriate data analyses;
- demonstrating the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to analysing medical data;
- drawing on a mathematical and clinical perspectives on medical research;
- evaluating and criticising existing analyses and conclusions;
- make reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data.

Learning context

The learning context will include the analysis of, and decision making in, complex and unpredictable situations. The structure of the programme will provide breadth and/or depth of study and opportunities for drawing upon appropriate resources and techniques. Opportunities will be provided for students to develop:
- interests and specialisation within the broad area of medical statistics;
- their involvement in the design and management of their learning activities;
- the communication skills necessary to report the conclusions of their analyses.
Students will be expected to progress to fully autonomous study and work.
