Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

1. Demonstrate an understanding of how individuals and groups have existed, acted, and thought in a range of societies and cultures across a broad chronological and geographical span through the research expertise of the School
2. Recognise different interpretations of the past and appreciate the value and diversity of historical works
3. Orientate themselves in topics that are new to them, and locate their studies within broader historical contexts
4. Apply fundamental standards and practices of historical study for research, discussion, and assessed work
5. Select, evaluate, and utilise appropriate source material in response to tasks and questions set by tutors
6. Appreciate the range, value, and challenges of primary source material available for historical study
7. Recognise the uses of the past and the challenges of the historical discipline
8. Present a structured and coherent analysis, in a variety of formats, based on historical sources
9. Understand and harness the skills for inclusive historical practice

Transferable (key) skills

Students will have had the opportunity to acquire, as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

1. Qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment, such as independence of mind, initiative, group work, locating and handling information, analytical ability, problem-solving, oral and written communication, intellectual integrity, empathy;
2. Skills necessary for exercising of personal responsibility, including self-discipline and self-direction, peer and self-appraisal.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:
1. Demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard historical concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;
2. Work that covers a restricted area of the discipline;
3. Demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies.
