Pre-requisite qualifications

Some basic proficiency in Arabic language at lower intermediate level, including familiarity with the Arabic alphabet and the basics of Arabic language convention. An entry test will be required to assess proficiency.

Module summary

This module is offered as a Discovery module for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. On completion of this module students will be able to: understand simple instructions, respond appropriately in everyday situations, collect information from short texts in the target language, write limited pieces of work in the target language, express themselves using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a limited number of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where the target language is spoken.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to progress students from beginners' level to the intermediate level in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The module will also help in raising awareness of the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to: understand simple instructions, respond appropriately in everyday situations, collect information from short texts in the target language, write limited pieces of work in the target language, express themselves using limited vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a limited number of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker. Skills outcomes
1. Demonstrate a good awareness of the contextual use of Arabic grammar.
2. Demonstrate the relevant skills in translating from and into Arabic.
3. Be able to deal with complex and complicated Arabic sentence structure at the intermediate level.
4. Demonstrate the ability to converse confidently at the intermediate level.
5. Demonstrate a confident use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
6. Culture awareness

Syllabus

1. Students will be introduced to relevant everyday topics through reading comprehension.
2. Emphasis on the Interactive communication language learning approach; reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair and group discussion.
3. The study of grammatical structures: (e.g. case marking, quantifiers, idafa construction, transitive and intransitive verbs, the dual, similarity particles, superlatives, object pronouns etc…)
4. Students will be introduced to aspects of Arabic culture and society.

Private study

258 private hours of study, including hours spent on preparatory reading for lectures and seminars, preparation for presentations, coursework preparation and for exams and other assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored through language coursework, oral presentations and written examination in May/June.

The same fortnightly language coursework is set in semesters 1 & 2 as for ARAB2007. In addition students of ARAB5150M submit two coursework items at the end of each semester on grammar and translation. These two assignments count towards the 40% of formal assessment designated for coursework.
