Pre-requisite qualifications

Intermediate proficiency in Arabic language is required, including the ability to communicate using simple Arabic structures. An entry test will be required to assess proficiency.

Module summary

This module is offered as Discovery/Elective module for both Undergraduate and Ppostgraduate students. On completion of this module students will be able to: understand advanced Arabic texts, respond appropriately in everyday situations, collect information from different types of texts in the target language, write advanced pieces of work in the target language, express themselves using a variety of vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a wide range of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where the target language is spoken. Students also will be able to translate advanced Islamic texts into Arabic.

Objectives

The aim of this module is to progress students from Intermediate level to the high intermediate and advanced level in the four skills (reading, writing, speaking and listening). The module will also help in raising awareness of the linguistic and cultural differences between Arabic and English.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will be able to: understand advanced Arabic texts, respond appropriately in everyday situations, collect information from different types of texts in the target language, write advanced pieces of work in the target language, express themselves using a variety of vocabulary and formulaic expressions and use the target language in a wide range of contexts so that it can be understood by a sympathetic native speaker. Students will also develop an understanding of the structure of the language and the culture of the countries where the target language is spoken. Students also will be able to translate advanced Islamic texts into Arabic.

Skills outcomes
1. Demonstrate a good awareness of the contextual use of Arabic grammar.
2. Demonstrate the relevant skills in translating advanced texts from and into Arabic.
3. Be able to deal with complex and complicated Arabic texts, especially Islamic texts.
4. Demonstrate the ability to converse confidently at the high intermediate and advanced levels.
5. Demonstrate a confident use of practical skills in Arabic: reading, writing, speaking and listening.
6. Cultural awareness.


Syllabus

1. Students will be introduced to relevant everyday topics through reading comprehension.
2. Emphasis on the Interactive communication language learning approach: reading, writing, listening and speaking skills will be developed by means of role-play, pair and group discussion.
3. The study of grammatical structures: (e.g. kana and its sisters, inna and its sisters, idafa construction, superlatives, rhetorical devices etc.)
4. Students will be introduced to aspects of Arabic culture and society.

Private study

258 private hours of study, including hours spent on preparatory reading for lectures and seminars, preparation for presentations, coursework preparation and for exams and other assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students' progress will be monitored through language weekly/fortnightly coursework, oral presentations and written examination in May/June.

The same fortnightly language coursework is set in semesters 1 & 2 as for ARAB3100. In addition students of ARAB5175M submit two coursework items at the end of each semester on grammar and translation. These two assignments count towards the 40% of formal assessment designated for coursework.
