Module summary

The aim of this module is to introduce the student to the role within their healthcare profession and the wider healthcare environment. It is based on the 6 values of the NHS Constitution. Students will have the opportunity for interprofessional learning in some elements of the module with Healthcare Science students from Audiology and Cardiac Physiology programmes.Information literature and evidence based practice will underpin the module and a study skills workshop will ensure the students are signposted to the requirements of degree level study

Objectives

The module will begin to develop the student’s knowledge and understanding of the nature and expectations of their chosen profession and how their profession integrates with the other professions represented in the Interdisciplinary session on the module.
Students will begin to explore the fundamental concepts which underpin contemporary healthcare practice. They will be introduced to the historical, cultural and legislative changes which have influenced the development of the modern NHS on a national and local level.
The module will be delivered using the 6 values of the NHS constitution alongside their professional and regulatory body requ
rements and reference will be made to the University of Leeds Partnership:

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module you will be able to:

1. Discuss the importance of communication in the healthcare setting

4. Understand the concept of ethical practice in relation to respect and dignity
5. Review the psychology of health/sociology of health and social care
6. Understand reflection in terms of your own practice
7. Discuss professionalism and Interdisciplinary working including conduct
8. Understand the information literacy, evidence based practice and study skills that underpin the module.

Private study

Private study time will be spent reading literature and preparation for lectures and tutorials and assessment.

Independent study will be in completing the online guided study packages.

Throughout the module there will be an increasing emphasis upon independence in learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring of progress will be through their participation within the tutorial sessions and group work activities and completion of the online guided study package.
