Module summary
The aim of this module is to introduce the student to their role in healthcare practice. They will develop an understanding of the key principles that underpin person centred care that is non-discriminatory, respectful and compassionate, and take account of any need for adjustments. They will explore their role within their profession and the wider multi-disciplinary team. Students will be prepared for the transition to undergraduate studies through a series of workshops and activities in collaboration with skills@library to help develop their study skills to support their learning and achieve success.Objectives
This module introduces the fundamental principles of person-centred care and the core values of the NHS. Students will begin to explore how these principles will enable them to provide holistic care for all patients, contribute to a positive patient experience, and be an effective member of the healthcare team.Learning outcomes
At the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Identify key principles of communication that are essential for the provision of a person-centred healthcare service
2. Review the NHS values and how they can be embedded into healthcare practice to provide person centred care that is non-discriminatory, respectful and compassionate, and take account of any need for adjustments.
3. Discuss the psychology of health/sociology of health and social care
4. Understand the principles of reflective practice in healthcare
5. Develop an understanding of the expectations of conduct, ethics and performance associated with healthcare practice
6. Identify and develop academic skills to support student learning and student success

Private study
Independent online learning allocated to access resources and advice provided by skills@library and using this to complete activities in the study skills workbook.Students will be expected to undertake pre-reading and complete preparatory activities to contribute to lectures and group activities.
Private study should be utilised to write up lecture notes and do pre- and post-session reading on the topics covered as well as in preparation for the assessment.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The study skills workbook will enable students to develop academic study skills by using a combination of signposting to skills@library resources and consolidating with activities. This will prepare the student understand the requirements and expectations of the module assessment/essay and use these study skills to plan, prepare and write up their summative essay (learning outcome 6).The students will be able to submit 20% of their summative essay as a draft to gain feedback in developing their summative coursework.
