Module summary
This module builds on knowledge acquired level 1 modules allowing students to apply their understanding of a range of pathophysiologies associated with cardiac and vascular science to the management through invasive cardiology.The module will provide students with knowledge on all aspects of non-Invasive diagnostics related to varying cardiac disease processes.Objectives
The overall aim of this module is to ensure that the student understands the breadth of the application of science within Cardiac Physiology, and building on previous learning, develops and applies knowledge and understanding in Cardiac Physiology.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will have knowledge in:
1. Understand the abbreviations and units used in specific to assessments for CAD demonstrate the ability to apply these to clinical situations.
2. Understand the normal physiological variability in humans regards diagnostic procedures including ETT
3. Understand how to utilise normal ranges to define normal and abnormal test results in Exercise Tolerance Testing.
4. Understand the clinical framework for, and basic principles of cardiac exercise stress testing.
5. Recognise life-threatening arrhythmias.
6. Discuss and analyse procedure limitations e.g. sensitivity and specificity of exercise stress testing.
7. Justify the importance of effective communication skills and respect for the rights, dignity and privacy of patients with additional consideration to ethical issues, autonomy and responsibility.
8. Explain the implications of working in multidisciplinary teams identifying the behaviours that contribute to effective team working.
9. Discuss international diversity with regards to guideline development / implementation and service delivery.
10. Discuss complex scientific information in ways that can be understood by patients and practitioners in other areas with an understanding of public engagement.
Skills outcomes
Within this module students will develop subject specific skills transferable into practice. Specific skills will be the interpretation, analysis of Non-Invasive diagnostic procedures for Ischaemic Heart Disease.

Content will include
The effect of myocardial infarction and ischaemia on the electrocardiogram
Circulatory control and response to exercise
Principles of Cardiac Exercise stress testing
Characteristics of recording equipment
Indications / Contra-Indications and end-points
Recommended measurement technique
Common problems
Protocols e.g. Bruce
Cardiac arrhythmias and exercise
Differential diagnosis of cardiac and non-cardiac outcomes
Principles of CT Calcium scoring for assessment CAD
Principles of diagnostic functional imaging for assessment of CAD
Principles and application of provocative testing including head up tilt testing and valsalva manoeuvres

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress during this module will be monitored through the use of the Cardiology workbook; answers will be discussed at the beginning of the following session. This will allow for self –evaluation of knowledge and identify early on the need for additional support where required.

Students to make their presentation live through Microsoft TEAMs. Both exam and presentation need to be passed to pass module. There is no compensation between marks. The Cardiology workbook tasks will be discussed at the beginning of the following session. This will allow for self –evaluation of knowledge and identify early on the need for additional support where required..
