Module summary

This module will develop non-invasive clinical skills within the cardiac physiology practice settling.

Objectives

On successful completion of this module the student will:

Produce and evaluate an electrocardiograph on an adult
Record and evaluate a non-invasive BP recording
Produce, evaluate and interpret recordings for basic ambulatory ECG
Produce and evaluate recordings for ambulatory BP analysis

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will have knowledge in:

1. Review and evaluate departmental protocols in relation to the core skills in health and safety, human rights, patient identification, communication skills and management and quality assurance.
2. Discuss the underpinning principles of integrating knowledge of basic and clinical science associated with Electrocardiography, non-invasive BP measurement and Ambulatory monitoring.
3. Review and evaluate routine tasks in relation to Electrocardiography, non-invasive BP measurement and Ambulatory monitoring.
4. Discuss the test selection process for Electrocardiography, non-invasive BP measurement and Ambulatory monitoring.
5. Produce a Professional portfolio which cumulatively records/provides evidence of the skills, knowledge and attitudes gained with regards to Electrocardiography, non-invasive BP measurement and Ambulatory monitoring.
6. Demonstrate increased knowledge, understanding and confidence in application of the core skills in clinical practice.
7. Demonstrate competence for routine tasks / situations in Cardiology including:
• Electrocardiography
• Blood pressure measurement
• Ambulatory Electrocardiographic monitoring
• Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring
8. Make the appropriate choice of equipment/procedure and use equipment to produce the highest quality results.
9. Perform patient investigations in a safe manner whilst undertaking appropriate infection control techniques.
10. Undertake and document measurements and assist in the production of a factual report.
11. Critically apply the scientific principles covered in the academic module within own practice.
12. Discuss regulations regarding safeguarding
13. Discuss a range of professional issues including patient centred care, communication, diversity, health inequalities, leadership, team work, self awareness, ethics, infection control, health inequalities, quality assurance, regulation and time management.

Skills outcomes
During this module students will enhance the skills required for non invasive cardiology, specifically ECG, ambulatory ECG, non invasive blood pressure and ambulatory BP.

Indications and contra-indications for testing
Health and Safety including safe handling of reagents
Graphical representation of results and interpretation
Safe decontamination of equipment
Quality standards, control and assurance for all activities
Electrocardiography including recognition of the changes related to Age, gender, ethnic origin and pregnancy
Blood pressure measurement
Intermediate life support
Ambulatory Electrocardiography
Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student progress will be monitored using a tripartite approach in accordance with School policy.
The work based mentor and student will have regular meetings to monitor progress. This will be communicated via progress reports to the university staff. Face to face tripartite meetings will occur three times per academic year.
There are 6 tutorials encompassed within the module, these will be utilised to monitor progression within the work based profiles and provide academic support for the summative assessment. Where applicable inter-professional tutorials will be utilised to support practice development.

No compensation between components. Both components must be passed. Failure of either component will result in that part being resubmitted. Reflective essays will be subject to 2 re-sit opportunities. Practice profiles have 1 re-sit attempt, failure at 2nd attempt will result in students requiring to withdraw. Any practice hours not completed will be subject to completing during academic breaks. Practice must be completed and passed prior to commencing any further practice modules.
