Module summary
The ability to distinguish normal and abnormal imaging findings, and to be able to communicate them effectively, is a core competence of the Diagnostic Radiographer. Preliminary image/clinical evaluation, or commenting, is a widely utilised method for providing this communication and this module aims to allow students to develop, demonstrate, and reflect upon their competence to provide preliminary image evaluations. Providing the underpinning principles of image interpretation, audit and governance, students will focus on one area of practice where they will undertake a clinical audit of competence within that place to demonstrate their ability to provide preliminary image evaluations in that area. Independent working and critical reflection of the process will help students to further develop your image interpretation skills post-registration.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to demonstrate their ability to provide a preliminary evaluation of diagnostic images relevant to a negotiated area of imaging / clinical practice.Learning outcomes
At the end of this module the student should be able to:
1. Demonstrate a specialist knowledge of relevant normal and abnormal appearances;
2. Demonstrate an understanding of relevant image classification schemes and preliminary evaluation;
3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of how imaging findings affect clinical management
4. Critically reflect on own practice within the context of local and national performance standards, where appropriate.
Skills outcomes
Systematic approach to image evaluation

90. This module is predominantly an independent work-based learning module where the student will need to undertake a clinical audit within the clinical setting of their choice. The student will need to negotiate access to the clinical placement and images to be able to undertake the audit and then complete the required number of cases. Remaining time will then be spent developing the presentation for the summative assessment.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
The student will be offered group and individual tutorials with the module team to help negotiate their placement, prepare and analyse their audit and to evaluate progression along the process.The opportunity to provide a draft of up to 20% of the presentation slides will be provided.
Methods of assessment
Coursework
Assessment type | Notes | % of formal assessment |
Oral Presentation | 20 minute Oral Presentation | 100.00 |
Portfolio | Clinical audit (Pass/Fail) | 0.00 |
Total percentage (Assessment Coursework) | 100.00 |
The clinical audit will require the student to undertake a number of cases related to their focus of practice, write a preliminary evaluation, compare it to the formal report and then provide an overall summary of their performance (in terms of accuracy etc). The completion of the audit is compulsory but is does not contribute to the overall module mark. The module mark comes from the verbal presentation which will provide a critical reflection of the audit process.
