Pre-requisite qualifications

Students who enrol on this module must have successfully completed year 1 and 2 of the BSc Healthcare Science (Cardiac Physiology) Programme.

Module replaces

This module is restructuring content currently delivered in year 3 and extending the cardiac ultrasound element to include more content in line with workforce planning requirements

This module is not approved as a discovery module

Module summary

This module will provide students with an understanding of the key concepts associated with cardiac devices and cardiac ultrasound and broaden their knowledge in the application of management processes for patients with a range of cardiac disease processes including paediatric and congenital heart disease.

Objectives

This module will provide students an in-depth knowledge in the principles and application of procedures for cardiac device implantation and follow up to include both basic and complex devices. The module will also introduce students to the utilisation of cardiac ultrasound and basic scanning principles. Students will develop knowledge that they will then apply within their practice module. Utilising a blended learning approach students will be provided with both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning.

Learning outcomes
1. Critically evaluate the physiology, pathophysiology, and pharmacology relevant to cardiac implantable devices

2. Identification, analysis and measurement of procedure specific data including both normal and abnormal measurements

3. Formulate accurate reports relevant to specific procedures

4. Develop analytical and problem-solving skills to apply to procedure specific trouble shooting

5. Develop knowledge and skills required to complete and report basic diagnostic cardiac ultrasound applying knowledge to clinical scenarios

6. Develop independent study skills to critically evaluate one pathology of the student’s choice

Skills outcomes
This level 3 module will develop subject specific skills transferable into practice. Specific skills will be the interpretation, analysis, and accurate measurement of cardiac device and ultrasound data. Interpretation of diagnostic data and images will be introduced, practiced, and assessed throughout the module.

Simulated learning will be utilised to develop practical skills as well as to reinforce theory taught within the module.


Syllabus

The module will cover a broad range of procedures, principles and applications which are carried out during both cardiac device implantation and follow up. These will be linked to the key concepts of indications, contraindications and evidence-based practice.

The module will also cover the key changes linked to cardiac disease and rhythm disorders linked to the associated treatment options.



The syllabus also introduces the utilisation and application of cardiac ultrasound as a diagnostic tool.

Private study

Students will be provided with workbooks closely linked to the lecture sessions to consolidate learning. Workbooks will constitute independent learning alongside utilising the epicardio simulation software to further develop and consolidate learning. Students will be expected to access online journals and websites to consolidate understanding of clinical guidelines relevant to practice. Students will also be able to access simulation equipment for both device implant and cardiac ultrasound for independent learning.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Workbook which will run alongside the lecture delivery, this will be provided in 4 parts consisting of data interpretation and measurement as well as short answer questions. These will be in similar format to examination questions to allow students formative feedback. Feedback will also be provided on group work set throughout the module. Group presentations will allow formative feedback in preparation for the individual summative presentations.

Both assessed pieces of work must be passed in order to pass the module.  There is no compensation between the two pieces of work.  Failure of either element will result in a resit opportunity for the failed component(s) of assessment and a capped overall module mark of 40% following a pass at resubmission.
