Module summary
This module will provide students with an understanding of the key concepts associated with invasive cardiac investigations and treatment, and broaden their knowledge in the application of management processes for patients with a range of cardiac disease processes including paediatric and congenital.Objectives
This module will give the students a depth of knowledge in the underpinning principles of cardiac pacing and application of diagnostic cardiology to paediatric and congenital patients. Students will develop the knowledge required to apply to practice. Utilising blended learning approach students will be provided with both theory and practical sessions to enhance learning. Students will be required to apply prior knowledge to the gain greater insight into cardiology.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate the physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology relevant to cardiac catheterisation and cardiac pacing
2. Critically evaluate the practice and principles associated with invasive pressure measurements and cardiac pacing implants and follow up.
3. Discuss the indications and contraindications for invasive procedures
4. Evaluate Equipment set up, patient set up and asepsis
5. Evaluate pacemaker device and lead use/design
6. Identification, analysis and measurement of procedure specific data including both normal and abnormal measurements
7. Critically evaluate the principles and application of provocative procedures
8. Apply prior knowledge to the gain greater insight into patient pathways for invasive procedures
9. Evaluate and discuss the application of clinical pathways in a range of congenital heart diseases
10. Explain the differences between congenital heart diseases and acquired adult heart diseases with respect to cardiac physiology investigations and demonstrate the ability to apply this to clinical settings understanding global and cultural diversity.
11. Have an understanding of advanced diagnostic and therapeutic procedures such as ICD’s and echocardiography.
12. Critically evaluate the importance of patient centred care, recognising the needs of patients with disabilities and discuss complex scientific information in ways that can be understood by patients and practitioners in other areas with an understanding of public engagement.
Skills outcomes
This level 3 module will develop subject specific skills transferable into practice. Specific skills will be the interpretation, analysis and accurate measurement of cardiac catheterisation data and cardiac pacing parameters for both device follow up and implantation.

Effects of Heart failure on circulation
Cardiac Drugs: effects functions and application
Principles and application of left heart cardiac catheterisation
Principles and application of right heart catheterisation
Changes to invasive measurements associated with heart disease and associated interventional treatments.
Principles and application of pacemaker implants
Principles and application of pacemaker follow ups
Physiology, pathophysiology and pharmacology relevant to cardiac pacing and cardiac catheterisation
Application of cardiac diagnostic investigations and treatment in paediatric and congenital patients.

The overall pass mark for this level 3 module is 40, there is no compensation between elements and both components must be passed. The presentation will be 15 minutes with an additional 5 minutes for questioning. Further attempts will be arranged individually but no less than 6 weeks from notification of a fail.
