Module summary
This module will develop invasive clinical skills within the cardiac physiology practice settling.Objectives
This module will build upon the theory delivered within theory based modules, enabling students to further develop a broad appreciation of the range of work undertaken within both invasive and non invasive cardiac services, maintaining previously learnt clinical skills and participating in advanced cardiac procedures.The module will build on issues within clinical practice including diagnostic investigations, ethical considerations, professional responsibilities, and the importance of potential for employability specifically within the fields of invasive and non invasive cardiac services
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will have knowledge in:
1. Review and evaluate departmental protocols in relation to the core skills in health and safety, human rights, patient identification, communication skills and management and quality assurance.
2. Discuss the underpinning principles of integrating knowledge of basic and clinical science associated with ETT, haemodynamic monitoring during cardiac catheterisation and pacemaker implantation.
3. Review and evaluate routine tasks in relation to ETT, haemodynamic monitoring during cardiac catheterisation and pacemaker implantation.
4. Discuss the test selection process for ETT, haemodynamic monitoring during cardiac catheterisation and pacemaker implantation.
5. Produce a Professional portfolio which cumulatively records/provides evidence of the skills, knowledge and attitudes gained with regards to ETT, haemodynamic monitoring during cardiac catheterisation and pacemaker implantation.
6. Demonstrate increased knowledge, understanding and confidence in application of the core skills in clinical practice.
7. Assist in performance and evaluation of ETT, haemodynamic monitoring during cardiac catheterisation and pacemaker implantation
8. Make the appropriate choice of equipment/procedure and use equipment to produce the highest quality results.
9. Perform patient investigations in a safe manner whilst undertaking appropriate infection control techniques.
10. Undertake and document measurements and assist in the production of a factual report.
11. Critically apply the scientific principles covered in the academic module within own practice.
12. Evaluate regulations regarding safeguarding
13. Evaluate a range of professional issues including patient centred care, communication, diversity, health inequalities, leadership, team work, self awareness, ethics, infection control, health inequalities, quality assurance, regulation and time management.
Skills outcomes
This level 3 module will enhance clinical practice skills developed throughout the 3 year programme allowing students to consolidate learning within the practice setting. Specific focus will be on the invasive aspects.
Syllabus
Module content will include:
Observation of the work carried out by Healthcare Professionals within a cardiovascular environment
Participate in the application and analysis of ambulatory monitors
Participate in the haemodynamic monitoring of patients during invasive cardiac procedures
Participate in the role of the Healthcare Professional during pacemaker implantations and follow ups.
Develop skills of effective communication, interpersonal skills and team working in the context of health care. Address barriers to effective communication and strategies to overcome them

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Student progress during this module will be monitored via clinical visits and student interviews utilising a tripartite approach in accordance with School policy.
The work based mentor and student will have regular meetings to monitor progress. This will be communicated via progress reports to the university staff. Face to face tripartite meetings will occur three times per academic year.
There are 6 tutorials encompassed within the module, these will be utilised to monitor progression within the work based profiles and provide academic support for the summative assessment. Where applicable inter-professional tutorials will be utilised to support practice development.
The VLE will play an important role in monitoring progress. A diagnostic investigation bank will allow students to upload anonymous case related information with a short commentary. This will allow students to demonstrate their ongoing practice as well as providing a forum for inter-student learning.

Practice Portfolio Set Semester 1 Due Semester 2 Pass/Fail No compensation between components. Both components must be passed. Students will have 2 re-sit opportunities for the reflective essay. There is 1 re-sit opportunity for the practice profile. Any practice hours not completed will be subject to completing during academic breaks.
