Module summary
This module maps social and cultural formations underscoring the history of ‘the West’ since the period known as the Enlightenment. We draw on events and developments to interrogate and challenge ideas and assumptions informing modernity and postmodernity. Texts you encounter range from academic writings to autobiography, fiction, cartography, paintings, memorials, photography and film. Contexts in which these are explored include rights, revolutions, enslavement, colonialism, the modern city, 20th-century war and questions around ‘the human’.Objectives
The goal of the module is to familiarise you with sources, concepts and methods relevant to the study of culture, society and history. You learn to analytically and critically approach printed and (audio-)visual texts with reference to the historical formations presented in the module. The combination of pre-recorded lectures, hands-on preparatory tasks and interactive seminars enables you to build up a robust set of transferable study and research skills.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. recognise, describe and critique historical formations that are central to the understanding of (Western/European) modernity and postmodernity,
2. explain and apply ‘historical thinking’,
3. historicise cultural artefacts and discourses,
4. identify traces of the formations discussed in the module in the world that surrounds you.

On successful completion of the module, you will be able to:
5. apply critical thinking and reading strategies to historical and contemporary sources;
6. work individually and collaboratively using university resources and digital technologies.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Marked components:Students submit weekly tests on the weekly topics and can see their numerical results immediately. Results indicate their level of understanding and the format rewards steady working on the module. Staff can also identify students who are not submitting tests on Blackboard.
P/F:
Small-scale activities are set regularly, relating to weekly content and skills elements, in preparation for the next session. Contributions are documented by students in different ways (e.g. as annotations, discussion group entries, bibliographies, playlists, photography). Examples are discussed in class by the lecturer and/or developed further and presented by student groups in the live sessions.
Participation is monitored to identify students who are not engaging in the preparatory tasks.

Pass/Fail components: The components can be re-used for resits. Resit alternative for the weekly tests: The online tests are set for weekly completion, but hard deadlines are in Week 6 (for Weeks 1-5) and Week 12 (for Weeks 7-11). Test questions and correct answers are made available to students after the deadline. Therefore, the tests cannot be reactivated for a resit. If a student completes fewer than five tests and/or fails the module due to low scores, a short-answer written assignment will be set as a resit.
