Module summary
In this module you will think more deeply about being part of a community of artists, setting up and working from your allocated studio space. Artist talks, studio visits, and skills workshops will deepen your understanding of art practice from a historical and contemporary perspective, allowing you to further develop your portfolio and sense of practice. Open studios and exhibition opportunities will structure your artistic production, and you will gradually refine your own artistic voice.Objectives
- To build upon and critically apply skills learned in the previous studio module;- To engage further with the complex nature of contemporary art practices, in a variety of media, and to develop critical and analytical skills on these;
- To continue to examine the histories and traditions of this practice to assist in situating themselves within the contemporary art world;
- To develop personal studio work, monitor the development of this work and apply critical skills in the appropriate modes of distribution and presentation.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Develop key concepts and formal approaches to art making;
2. Identify and evaluate the most appropriate use of different materials, processes and environments in approaches to problem solving, independently and /or collaboratively;
3. Locate your work within a contextual framework of contemporary fine art practice;
4. Show initiative and resourcefulness in the planning and resolution of self-initiated or collaborative projects.
Skills learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
5. Communication: the ability to tailor your message for the audience and listening to the views of others.
6. Interpersonal Skills: the ability to demonstrate awareness and understanding of self and others; to be able to build rapport, relationships and network with others.
Syllabus
Self-directed studio work as negotiated with studio tutors. Students must also engage with a series of seminars, individual and group tutorials, group crits and visiting artist lectures throughout the module which contributes to the discussions around contemporary art practice. Students will be expected to proactively seek out and engage with contemporary art programmes, galleries, institutions, journals and their online platforms.

Student progress is monitored through regular group reviews and individual and group tutorials:1-to-1 tutorials (6 per module);
Cross-level group crits (8 per module);
Open studios display;
Mid Year Review feedback tutorial;
Exhibition/display of practical work during Semester 2.
