Module summary
This module addresses debates in literary, historiographical and psychological theory about the ways the legacy of the historical trauma marked by the Holocaust is represented by survivors, historians, sociologists, psychoanalysts, writers, artists and museums. Rather than an historical study of the events of 1933-45, this module enables students to consider the continuing significance of this disaster in the larger context of European history and the challenges ‘the event’ poses to the ‘limits of representation’ (Friedländer).Objectives
The aims and objectives of this module are to consider the continuing signifiance of the events known as the Holocaust or Shoah as they enter representation. The module aims to enable you to consider the continuing impact of the Holocaust on the lives of its surviving witnesses and their children, to assess efforts to bear witness through films, texts and artworks, and to evaluate current attempts to memorialise and educate in the form of museums and monuments. The module will consider diaries, memoirs, films, testimonies, artworks, monuments, museums, and documentaries. This multidisciplinary cultural approach is designed to enable you to understand both the development of ways of representing the Holocaust from the post-war to the present, and the meaning of cultural memory of the Holocaust as social knowledge.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:
1. Recognise a selection of cultural artefacts and texts on the Holocaust.
2. Recognise the development of ways of representing and conceptualizing the Holocaust from the post-war to the present day
3. Understand key ideas such as trauma, testimony, cultural memory and the limits of representation.
4. Produce your own considered position on debates on representation and memorialization of the Holocaust.
Skills Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills learning outcomes:
5. Information Searching: the ability to interpret and present other people's ideas about Holocaust representation and synthesise these ideas to support opinion, argument and theories
6. Presentation Skills: Ability to deliver effective and engaging oral and visual presentations

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
-One 15-minute PowerPoint presentation to the group on chosen topic. Feedback offered during planning stage, as well as verbally and via email after the activity. There will also be an opportunity for peer feedback.-Weekly film journal entries on Minerva. Feedback offered via my own written responses to the journal entries, and discussions of the entries in class will provide peer feedback.
