Module summary

This module introduces you to the ways in which Western museums have represented and interpreted history and historical material. The module directs your attention to the dialectic between history and the museum, with a consideration of the role of the museum as a stage for history. The module considers the writings of historians, philosophers of history, curators, architects and cultural theorists, focusing on a broad conception of the 'museum', including art galleries, de-industrialised 'heritage', and the City as 'museum'.

Objectives

The module aims to introduce you to the idea of the museum as a space of historical representation and a discrete historical entity itself, in a series of interlinked themes – history and the museum; history in the museum; and history of the museum. Through an engagement with key theoretical texts in museum studies and philosophies of history, the module considers the museum’s role in the historical representation of history. It does this through weekly seminar formats and dynamic group learning activities. The module will enable you to develop independent critical research skills through reading, writing, discussion and debate.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to:
1. Investigate the relationship between the museum and different modes of historical representation.
2. Critically evaluate the history and development of museums and their collections.
3. Analyse the historical role and function of the museum.
4. Critically evaluate the history of the representational and interpretative strategies of the museum.
