Objectives

The module builds upon the introductory biochemistry of molecules, pathways and cells studied at level one.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have developed knowledge and extended further their understanding along the following major themes:
1. Protein Structure and Function Theme (Semester 1)
2. Genes Theme (Semester 2)

Protein Structure and Function Theme:
Ligand binding
Structural biology techniques including:
· mass spectrometry
· X-ray crystallography
· electron microscopy
· NMR
· AFM
Enzyme kinetics
Protein folding
Function of chaperones
Antibody structure and function
Use of antibodies in molecular biology
RNA biology
Bacterial infections

Semester 2
Genes Theme:
Eukaryotic gene expression including
· Epigenetics
· Transcription factors and their modifications
· Long range regulatory elements
Bioinformatics in relation to gene regulation
The cell cycle
Genetic diseases and therapy including:
· Genome organisation
· forensic analysis
· molecular diagnosis
- gene therapy
V(D)J recombination
Molecular biology of cancer
