Objectives
To allow students the opportunity to:- develop the ability to plan and implement a comprehensive literature search with a view to conducting laboratory research in the same area;
- use a range of literature-searching tools;
- develop the ability to critically evaluate and synthesise information from different published sources relevant to the topic;
- write a well-structured literature review;
- provide opportunity for students to identify objectives suitable for an extended research project;
- introduce students to value and importance of research seminars;
- manage time effectively, achieve objectives set and work independently;
- present research findings in the form of a poster.
Learning outcomes
-On completion of this module, students should have:
- advanced their skills in the appropriate and selective use of computer based literature search tools including online databases such as ISI Web of knowledge, Medline and PubMed;
- advanced their ability to critically evaluate and integrate information from a range of published sources connected to their topic area;
- completed a structured and well-presented literature review;
- presented an informative and readable poster explaining literature research findings and answered questions on the work;
- improved their ability to organise their time, achieve objectives set and report back on their achievements.
Syllabus
Students will be required to carry out a review of the literature in a scientific area that is relevant to their degree, of interest to them, and being actively researched by a group(s) within the School. In addition to developing skills required of a researcher, a major objective is to identify questions or hypotheses that can be answered or tested as part of an extended research project. This module will be assessed on the basis of the quality of the written literature review and a poster presentation. Students will also be required to attend a range of research seminars delivered by external speakers in the Faculty of Biological Sciences that are relevant to their programme of study. They will also be expected to maintain and present notes on research seminars.

This includes searching and reading scientific research literature (related to both project and research seminars), analysis of data, writing a literature review and preparation for oral examination.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Routine monitoring by individual supervisors through supervision meetings. Supervisors will provide comments/feedback for 50% content of the first draft report before formal assessment.Methods of assessment
