Objectives

Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, the students should be able to:
- sample and monitor field populations using the appropriate techniques,
- identify to a certain level the organisms concerned,
- test hypotheses related to the ecology of the organisms,
- carry out simple analyses of the results obtained, and
- present their results in the form of a written report, poster or oral presentation.

Syllabus

This field course provides an opportunity for those students registered for biological science degrees to undertake field-based studies. Field studies are based in Millport. Introductory lectures are provided on the first day, and each student then takes one sub-module of 3.5 days duration.

Daily routines will involve a combination of field studies at various sites on the Isle of Cumbra, Scotland and laboratory-based preparatory and follow-up work in the laboratories of the Millport Field Studies Council Centre.

The sub-modules include Terrestrial Invertebrates, Parasitology, Plant Ecophysiology and Marine Biology. The emphasis within the different sub-modules varies, but all include elements of biological identification, hypothesis testing, data collection and interpretation and the written and verbal presentation of results.

Part of the final morning is set aside for discussions of the practical reports.
