Objectives
Students will be familiar with the biology of model organisms used in research and development across the animal kingdom, essential background for level 3 modules.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will:
- be familiar with the biology of the model organisms used in research and development across the animal kingdom;
- know essential biological background for level 3 modules in which current investigation of Animal Developmental Biology using genetic and molecular approaches will be addressed.
Syllabus
This module introduces you to the topic of animal developmental biology, the study of processes by which animals are formed at each generation. Lectures and practicals will provide descriptions of the life-cycles of species important in the study of development. These species may either be of classical importance to this subject or crucial to current research to understand the mechanisms behind the developmental processes we can observe.
You will be introduced to experimental approaches used in the study of development and you will come to appreciate the characteristics that make an animal a particularly suitable subject for study. You will be provided with a foretaste of the mechanistic details behind the complex and fundamental processes directing an organism's development to be revealed in third year courses.
