Objectives

The objectives of the module are;
- To study the human genome, chromosomes and heredity, particularly in relation to genetic disease and cancer;
- To discuss the impact of human genomic information in the context of human health and genetic counselling.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
- demonstrate a broad understanding of the concepts and information relevant to human genetics;
- understand human genome, chromosomes and heredity, particularly in relation to genetic disease and cancer;
- understand the impact of human genomic information in the context of human health and genetic counselling;
- understand the qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment related to genetics;
- understand the skills necessary for exercising personal responsibility;
- demonstrate excellent decision making skills in relation to human genetics.


Syllabus

- chromatin context of the human genome and introduction to epigenetics;
- the Human genome project, including the use of electronic databases;
- organisation and evolution of the human genome;
- pathogenic and non-pathogenic human genetic variability;
- identifying human disease genes;
- single-gene-and multifactorial disorders;
- human cytogenetics and medical genetics;
- cancer genetics;
- genetic counselling.
