Module summary

This module covers developmental biology exploring evolution and adaptation. Building on Level 2 material, this course is taught in an evolutionary context and covers animal development from fertilisation through to the development of key organ systems. The focus of the module is on covering fundamental material but areas where there is substantial current research facilitating the students understanding of the current research field and their critical analysis skills.

Objectives

Over the course of this module, students will become familiar with some of the key processes in developmental biology and understand how a number of model organisms have informed our understanding of animal developmental biology. Lectures are designed to provide fundamental core material as well as address the cutting edge of research in a selection of these areas. Labs support this learning by developing independent thinking and allowing students to design their own experiments based on lecture material.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Describe and define key aspects of developmental biology across the animal kingdom.
2. Outline the biology of some of the model organisms used in biological research across the animal kingdom.
3. Critically evaluate and synthesise current research in the field of developmental biology.

Skills Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of the module students will be able to:
4. Demonstrate the ability to take a logical approach to solving problems (emphasising data analysis and interpretation)

Syllabus

Details of the syllabus will be provided on the Minerva organisation (or equivalent) for the module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Student attendance at lectures and laboratories will be monitored in line with standard faculty practice. The laboratory sessions will provide the opportunity for formative feedback during this course, academic staff (and demonstrators) will be briefed to provide active learning opportunities for the students. An example short answer question will be provided for the students to try.
