Objectives
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Comment confidently and critically on, and thus demonstrate a knowledge and comprehension of, the core subject areas:
(a) The influence of maternal nutrition on development and growth of the neonate;
(b) The influence of nutrition on female performance;
(c) The relationship between nutrition and antioxidant systems;
(d) The interactions between rumen microbial metabolism and the metabolism of the host animal, and the implications for feeding forages;
(e) Growth and carcass composition of meat animals and the nutrition manipulation thereof.
2. Demonstrate proficiency to a level of conscious competence in the following:
(a) extracting and summarising information from literature to complement what is being taught in lectures
(b) problem solving;
(c) verbal communication of ideas in class discussions;
(d) Time management, via meeting assignment deadlines.
Syllabus
The module will consider the relationship between nutrition and the associated metabolic response with regard to the development of the neonate, lactation, and growth. Development of the neonate will consider the relationship between nutrition and the animal's immune system and antioxidant systems.
Under the heading growth will be considered the influence of an animal's nutrition on meat quality, and the ways in which meat quality can be manipulated via the animal diet to meet consumer requirements. The physiological and metabolic basis of ruminant nutrition, namely energy and nitrogen metabolism and the interactions between rumen and animal and the implications for feeding forages will be studied.
The subject matter of the module represents areas of research expertise within the Centre for Animal Sciences.
