Module summary
An introductory lecture, followed by a series of site visits to meet land managers and Natural England representatives. The module concludes with a series of student seminars where groups present their vision of how one particular reserve should be managed in the future.Individuals provide executive summaries of their proposals. Groups also organise their own field visits to assess reserve quality from the perspective of dead wood feeding organisms.Objectives
On completion of this module students will be familiar with a range of habitats and conservation management practices used on them, and will be able to understand issues inherent in designing, implementing and evaluating habitat management changes.Learning outcomes
Knowledge of a range of habitats, their key biodiversity features, the threats they face and how management seeks to avert these threats.
Also, knowledge of the reserve management cycle and of management practices relevant to each habitat.
Skills outcomes
Observational skills and land management skills. Also oral skills.
Syllabus
The module is taught largely on location at a series of natural England reserves, SSSIs and other sites of conservation interest in the region, chosen to reflect a wide range of habitats and management issues.
Each session will provide a brief introduction to the sites and its habitats and will focus on a particular management practice and stage of the decision-making and implementation process.
Details of site locations will vary from year to year. The site visits will be supplemented with an introductory lecture on conservation objectives, and will culminate in a team exercise to address a current conservation management issue.
