Year running 2019/20
This module is not approved as an Elective
Objectives
On completion of this module students will be able to apply the principles taught in the core masters programme to biodiversity and/or conservation related practice. They will have gained significant experience in approaches used in the workplace and will have an opportunity to build on these experiences in written and verbal presentations.
Syllabus
The module will allow masters students to participate in a 'sandwich' year scheme, providing a twelve month period of work experience in the middle of their Master's programme.
Internship placements (normally either one 12 month placement or two 6 month placements) will be chosen from a list of approved options, relevant to the degree scheme ( with eg conservation organisations, statutory agencies, consultancies, research centres, or nature reserves).
Students will choose a sandwich supervisor, and will meet with him/her before beginning the placement, periodically over the year and upon their return. They will keep a log of their experiences and of the application of ideas and methods learned in their coursework to the practical problems faced in the workplace.
Upon their return to campus you will give a short seminar on workplace experience and will submit a written report summarising their experiences. Both elements need to be to a satisfactory standard to pass the module. Satisfactory references from each host organisation need to be submitted.
