Module summary

Students will learn how to manage data collection, how to appropriately handle information, how to analyse the data they collect and how to present their findings to a range of audiences. These skills are invaluable in an academic career and in other graduate positions, and will prepare students for lab-, work- and field-based research projects.

Objectives

This module is designed to provide graduates with a broad range of skills that they will need either to study at a higher degree level or for a range of graduate careers. Data handling, management and analysis will be a major focus of the module, with other important research skills covered in taught material, for example, ethics, research safety and risk assessment.

Learning outcomes
1. Assess, manage and handle a range of common data types in order to analyse them;

2. Choose and perform appropriate statistical analyses for a range of common forms of data;

3. Interpret and present statistical evidence; 

4. Understand the principles of experimental design

5. Present research findings appropriately to a variety of different audiences; 

Syllabus

Computer-based sessions will introduce the concepts of data handling and data management across a number of relevant and commonly-encountered types of dataset. Skills in research will be taught in workshops and tutorials, including science communication.

Private study

Students will work through the data analysis sessions to consolidate their knowledge and practice skills independently. Tutorial tasks will be completed independently. Students will also use the time to prepare their assessments.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Computer sessions will have short answer and/or multiple choice questions associated with them, which students can complete online to self-assess progress and knowledge in the sessions. Tutorials will provide peer and staff feedback on ideas and discussions.
