Objectives

The module is aimed at providing hands-on practical skills relating to a specialized area of study and as such offers choice from amongst a range of topics that will be of value for sampling and monitoring populations, or for conservation management.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will have
- developed their written presentation skills, and written a piece of science journalism;
- researched and prepared a (mock) funding application;
- understood the principles and practice of emergency first aid, and risk assessment and safety planning for fieldwork;
- understood how ethics impacts on ecological research;
- understood the practice of freshwater biodiversity recording and sampling in a Yorkshire context.


Syllabus

The module will consist of lectures, workshops and practical sessions covering grant-writing; survey design; public understanding of science; emergency first aid and fieldwork safety; freshwater biodiversity and invertebrate surveys; ethics; conservation issues.

Topics to be covered may vary slightly from year to year.

Only one option is available to each student. If tuition costs to the school exceed £250 the individual student will need to pay the difference personally.

Initial options include:
- Bat survey techniques
- Newt survey techniques
- Small mammal trapping
- Bird census techniques
- Chain saw use (certificated)
- Brushcutter use (certificated)
- Single rope tree-climbing techniques (certificated).

The module comprises key practical skills for a conservation career, in some case leading to a professional certificate.
