Module summary
The module is taught largely on location at a series of nature reserves, SSSIs and other sites of conservation interest in the region, chosen to reflect a wide range of habitats and management issues. The site visits will be supplemented with a range of lectures on different management issues, including external lecturers from relevant organisations.Assessments consist of a group exercise to produce a plan to improve biodiversity at an urban site, and an individual executive summary for a management plan for a chosen site.Objectives
This module is an enlarged version of BLGY5116M Habitat Management. It incorporates several lectures and a field visit from BLGY5108M which is being discontinued. Module assessments are unchanged from the previous module, and LOs etc only slightly modified to reflect the additional content.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students will be able to:
1. Understand the principles underlying management of a range of UK habitats ;
2. Be familiar with the key biodiversity features of, and threats to, these habitats;
3. Understand the issues in designing and implementing management changes.
Syllabus
Principles of habitat management, and an introduction to a range of habitats in Yorkshire, including terrestrial (lowland and upland), freshwater and coastal. Introduction to the organisations involved in habitat management in the UK (charity, public, NGO etc). The reserve management cycle, and the decision-making and implementation process.
