The module covers a range of skills that are important for biodiversity and conservation. These include statistical skills, presentation skills, first aid and field safety, public understanding of science, research ethics.Objectives
The module covers a range of skills that are important for biodiversity and conservation.The module is an enlarged version of BLGY5107M, incorporating material from BLGY5108M/5111M and now runs over both semesters
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Perform appropriate statistical analyses for a range of common forms of data;
2. Interpret statistical evidence;
3. Understand the principles of emergency first aid and field safety;
4. Understand the framework of conservation in the UK;
5. Produce an oral presentation on a conservation topic;
6. Understand how to present ecological findings to the public;
7. Understand ethical considerations for ecological research.
Skills outcomes
Students will develop their oral presentation and data analysis skills, and will develop emergency first aid skills.
Syllabus
The module will consist of lectures, tutorials and linked computer sessions covering the use of statistics to analyse ecological data. Workshops and seminars will cover fieldwork safety, ethical issues in ecology, public understanding of science, and the framework of conservation in the UK, and a lecture and tutorials on presentation skills. In addition there will be a residential field course weekend introducing biodiversity sampling.
