Module summary
This module introduces the interdisciplinary field of tissue engineering and regenerative medicine. The need for and challenges of tissue engineering will be covered, along with the fundamentals of immunology and transplantation, tissue and matrix biology, biomaterials and cellular interactions, in vitro and in vivo models. This will be taught by lectures and an interactive workshop.Objectives
On completion of this module, students will have a basic knowledge of the major aspects of tissue engineering, namely:- fundamentals of cell and matrix biology;
- fundamentals of immunology;
- 2D and 3D tissue culture technology;
- standardization, quality control and regulatory issues.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
1. Discuss the major functions of the human immune system and the interplay with mechanisms of transplant rejection;
2. Evaluate the interplay between cells, matrix, biomaterials and immune system;
3. Demonstrate example approaches for preparing and analyzing tissue engineering constructs;
4. Construct scientific information comprehensibly in written format.
Syllabus
Students will cover, at an introductory level:
- the human immune system and role in transplant rejection;
- the biology of natural tissues and extracellular matrix;
- the definition of stem cells and development of cell therapies;
- in vitro and in vivo models relevant to tissue engineering;
- biomaterials and biomechanics;
- translation of technologies from bench to clinic.
