Module summary

In this module students will demonstrate enhanced skills in reading and preparing for written presentations. Develop and practice essay writing skills, demonstrate enhanced time keeping and group working skills.Students will experience using appropriate statistical analysis of data, develop further skills in preparing for CV writing, job application and interviews. Have a greater understanding of ethical considerations when working with humans and animals and develop basic programming skills for use with big data sets. Students will also learn skills of analysing research papers and communicating via academic posters. This will all be taught by lecture or workshop style activities to enable thorough understanding of topics. Students will be encouraged to do prior learning before sessions to turn up prepared and ready to discuss key elements.

Objectives

This module has two sets of objectives:
- Subject-specific: to deepen and broaden, and reinforce understanding of, particular topics within biomedical sciences, particularly relating to modules being studied in parallel with it, and to introduce broader aspects of the subject not covered elsewhere in the course.
- Transferable skills: workshops will cover and assess a wide range of skills, including critical reading, data analysis, and different forms of communication and presentation of scientific work. Furthermore, this module provides an opportunity to develop self-directed learning techniques.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, the students will:
1. Demonstrate enhanced skills in reading and preparing for written presentations;
2. Demonstrate further developed and practiced essay writing skills;
3. Demonstrate enhanced time keeping and team working skills;
4. Analyse data using appropriate statistical analysis of data;
5. Demonstrate further skills in preparing for CV writing, job application and interviews;
6. Explain ethical considerations when working with humans and animals;
7. Demonstrate basic programming skills for use with big data sets;
8. Be able to critique and assess research papers, and communicate scientific outcomes via construction of an academic poster.

Skills outcomes
The module provides many opportunities for self-directed learning.
- It will develop independent research skills to analyse and interpret data presented in structured workbooks;
- It provides an opportunity to work in groups and/ or as individuals on individual assignments within each tutorial, to perform short presentations in tutorials and to engage in debating ethical topics.

Syllabus

This module will consist of a variety of workshops with some pre-work, performing tasks in the sessions and producing outputs. The module will prepare students with the appropriate academic skills that will be useful through the rest of their course at Leeds and beyond.

Private study

The private study time will be used primarily in preparing for the workshops with guided work tasks to be completed, completing the statistics workbooks and preparing for group work task on animal ethics, preparing a poster and a programming project. Some key workshops will be V coded for attendance.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Attendance registers and marks will be collected from each workshop and monitored by the office/ module manager. This will allow an early detection of students who are struggling and allow us to discuss it with the student concerned and provide appropriate support were needed. Engagement with blended learning resources on Minerva. Some of the workshops and session will be V coded if they are vital to attend to achieve the learning objectives of the module.

Students will get the opportunity to submit a formative essay for peer marking as part of this module which will also enhance skills for other Level 2 theory-based modules. This links to learning objective 2.
