Module summary
This module is designed to give medical students taking intercalating degrees in the School of Biomedical Sciences the necessary background and skills to succeed. Students will receive training in academic writing, data analysis and laboratory report writing. Such skills will be critical for success in other Level 3 modules within the school, including Capstone projects.Objectives
The objective of this module is to ensure medical students taking intercalating degrees in the School of Biomedical Sciences have the background and skills for success during their intercalated BSc. This module provides opportunities to develop and apply key academic skills including essay writing, data collection in a laboratory setting, data analysis, statistics, and laboratory report writing.Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will be able to:
- Evaluate current knowledge relevant to the discipline.
- Analyse and interpret data collected in a laboratory setting.
- Appraise experimental findings and communicate effectively via a structured laboratory report.

Syllabus
This module will consist of tutorials, pre-recorded learning materials and attendance at a lab practical. Scientific skills developed during this module include: essay writing, literature searching and use of referencing software, the importance of academic integrity, data collection, how to choose and apply appropriate statistical tests, and scientific laboratory report writing.
