Module summary

This module provides the foundational mathematics consistent with A-level standard to ensure the basic skills are met to pursue an engineering discipline at degree level.

Objectives

To apply mathematical methods such as algebra, linear and quadratic equations, trigonometry, exponential and logarithmic functions, differential calculus and definite and indefinite integration to solve basic mathematical problems.

Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following learning outcomes relevant to the subject:

1. Have a knowledge and understanding of mathematics necessary for the analysis of, and to support applications of, key engineering principles and processes.

On successful completion of the module students will have demonstrated the following skills:

a. Technical skills
b. Problem solving & analytical skills


Syllabus

Basic algebra, transposing formulae, straight Lines, quadratics, trigonometry, trigonometric functions, scalene triangles, exponential functions, logarithmic function, gradient of curves, first and second derivatives, product, quotient, and chain rules, indefinite integration, definite integrals.
